Psychology of Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a specific state of mental awareness. It is an alteration of your normal waking state of consciousness. Simply put, when you are in Hypnosis, you are in a different state than your normal waking state. What do you experience in your normal state of consciousness? In a normal, waking state of mental awareness, your mind is fairly or acutely alert (depending on the situation!) and your body holds varying degrees of tension. In the mental state of Hypnosis, your mind is alert and aware, while your body is relaxed.

Risks of Hypnosis

While there are some risks involved in the use of Hypnosis, in some contexts, these have been greatly exaggerated. Milton Erickson, M.D. — psychiatrist and leading authority on Hypnosis — stated that Hypnosis itself has never been harmful in any way to a subject. However, just as can drugs or any other treatment, it can be misused. According to Dr. Erickson, it is the misuse, not Hypnosis itself, which could be harmful.
